Imagination Vs Psychosis, How To Maintain Your Agency

Life is a game and you are both the player and creator of your experience. Maraea D.

As a mystic who has experienced both a powerful imagination and something I’d label psychosis, there’s a key difference. Navigating the line between imagination vs psychosis is essential for how to maintain your agency and explore a rich inner world without becoming trapped by it. This is about exercising control over your mind and perception.

Defining Psychosis and the Role of Agency

Psychosis is a mental health condition where a person loses touch with reality, making it hard to tell what is real and what is not. Your ability to exercise your imagination, therefore, comes down to agency. Wielding your imagination is a powerful creative tool, but maintaining control is what keeps you grounded in reality and prevents you from losing your connection to it.

Personally, I am a huge advocate for using your imagination in creative pursuits. My life’s work as a producer and creative in media and broadcasting has shown me its value. It has been a real asset in those industries. I also have the ability to sit and story in my own mind, which can be a wonderful experience.

Imagination Vs Psychosis, How To Maintain Your Agency

The fundamental difference between using my imagination and the event I labelled as psychosis is control. You become trapped by psychosis, whereas you direct your imagination. The problem arises when your inner world takes over and you can no longer choose to exit it. True agency means you are always in the driver’s seat of your own mind.

The difference between using my imagination and the event that I’ve labelled as psychosis, for me, is that the psychosis was a series of visions that were just awful. They were terrible. I have never had anything like it. I didn’t like the fact that I lost control over my ability to see really cool things.

Once control was lost, the question immediately became, “How do I stop this? How do I exit this?” This struggle for control is the defining battle when facing a psychotic state, a battle that is not present when you are simply enjoying your creative mind.

How to Stay Grounded While Enjoying a Rich Inner World

There is nothing wrong with enjoying a rich inner world, as long as you can ground yourself in physical reality. You still have to come back to your body and its needs. A multidimensional life is possible when you can balance your inner explorations with practical, everyday tasks. Your imagination can build worlds, but it can’t make you a cup of tea.

To stay grounded, remember to tend to your basic human needs. These simple actions anchor you to the present moment.

  • Put the toast on and add some butter.
  • Make yourself a cup of tea.
  • Go to the toilet.
  • Have a shower and take care of your body.

From Personal Experience to Collective Clarity

You can take the experiences you have in these multidimensions and place them into a container that others can appreciate, enjoy, or learn from. For example, I believe my experience with the “entangled field” will be useful for people. In time, it’s going to provide someone else with a how-to for the energetic entanglement that can interfere with your experience.

When you add up all of that entanglement across the world, it’s a mess. As we learn to develop healthier ways of engaging with one another, we’ll start to see more clarity and enjoyment. The macro-level entanglement that keeps us in a bind will start to dissolve as we demand clear and fair participation.

I will talk more about the field of entanglement, the field of correspondence, and the relational field in my upcoming masterclass, The Architecture of Being. It has its roots in Hermeticism and provides a map of reality. You can find more information about this and other programs in the resources available on my website.

The Mystic’s Perspective on Reality

At my heart, I am a mystic. I also identify as a starseed, a lightworker, and many other things. In this work, I approach it from the place of mysticism, looking beneath the mystery and bringing it forward. It’s about asking, “How about looking at the world through this lens?” Many mystics had at least one thing in common, and we’ve drawn on some of that philosophy.

Adaptation is the mother of creation.
