How I Shut Down My Psychosis, A Practical Guide

Life is a game and you are both the player and creator of your experience. Maraea D.

In this post, I share my personal story of how I shut down my psychosis. If you have experienced psychosis and are looking for a practical technique to manage it, I found a way to “shut it down” that involved a simple practice of “sending thoughts back to source”. Here’s a practical guide on what worked for me during the initial stages of my experience.

My Terrifying Introduction to Psychosis

My journey began when I started seeing very disturbing things and felt I had no control over my mind. Coming from a family with a history of schizoaffective disorders, I was terrified. Until that point, my inner world had only been filled with love and light, but my own rage had opened a door to harmful visualizations I did not want.

I was starting to see things that were really disturbing. I was absolutely terrified.

Although I have seen and imagined things since I was a child, this was different. In my 20s, I became so filled with rage that I started to agree and participate in visualizing harmful things. Through that agreement, I began to see darker aspects of energy at play, and it was a profoundly frightening experience.

How I Shut Down My Psychosis A Practical Guide

I found a practical way to shut down my psychosis by actively reprogramming my mind. The technique involves two core steps. First, you must consciously disagree to participate in the negative thoughts or visions. Second, every time a disturbing thought or image appears, you must consciously send it back to its source. This method helps you regain control.

This process is not about seeing these experiences as a “disorder”. I believe with every orienting principle comes an adaptive capacity that can become a superpower once you understand how to manage it. This guide is based on my firsthand experience with psychosis and what I learned to reclaim my mental space.

A Two-Step Process to Reclaim Your Mind

You may be able to implement this technique without a specific guided meditation. The power lies in your conscious decision and consistent practice. Here are the two fundamental steps I took to shut down the intrusive experiences.

  1. Disagree to Participate Any Longer. This is the crucial first step. You must make a firm, internal decision and statement that you no longer agree to experience these thoughts, visions, or words. It is an act of reclaiming your power and setting a boundary within your own mind.
  2. Send Everything Back to Source. The second step is an active, ongoing practice. Every single time a negative vision, thought, or set of words comes into your mind, you consciously take it and send it back to “source”. For me, source represents the neutral origin of all things, or nothingness. This prevents harmful energy from lingering.

Every time something came in, whether it was a vision or a thought or a set of words, I would take it and I would send it back to source.

The Timeline for Healing and What to Expect

This process requires both time and patience as it is not an overnight fix. It took about a month of conscious daily practice for the technique to become a habit. Within five months, the disturbing visions and sounds stopped entirely. It took a few years for all intrusive negative or hateful thoughts to completely disappear from my mind.

Consistency is the key. The patterns that keep us stuck in loops of fear, catastrophization, and self-hate did not form in a day, and they take time to undo. If you need more help and support with this process, I have created additional material that is very helpful for neurodivergence and changing these patterns. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the first step to manage psychotic thoughts?

The very first step is to make a conscious disagreement to participate any longer. You must actively state and feel “I don’t agree to this anymore.” This is the foundational action that begins the process of reclaiming your mental space.

What does it mean to ‘send it back to source’?

Sending it back to source is a visualization technique to neutralize intrusive thoughts or visions. Instead of fighting with them or letting them linger, you mentally package them up and return them to the universal origin of all things. This prevents the energy from harming you or others.

How long does this process take?

The timeline varies, but based on my experience, it took about one month of practice to form a habit. It took around five months to stop seeing or hearing things. Complete freedom from all intrusive negative thoughts took a few years of consistent effort.
